Almost all winter long this bird, which I thought was a woodpecker but I'm thinking it can't be. BUT I'm SO dumb with birds, and we all know that, I just love to look at them and listen to them but I'm thinking this is a Starling or something along that line but then again maybe it is a different type of woodpecker but most of the winter it would TAP, TAP, TAP, TAP on this vent outside on the top floor of our building and would drive everyone crazy. It would pull at that metal, and just day after day work so hard to get into that wall!

I apologize for the poor photo as I didn't have my good camera at the time, only my pocket camera but shot these at the time this little guy was furiously trying to get into that vent!

NOW today, I hear in the walls, many many cries of little baby birds so it is obvious this momma bird got into the wall to lay her eggs.
Does someone know the bird?
I am so happy that it did not nest on my side of the wall!!!!

THis is actually a Flicker.I believe you have the red-shated ones in your are.Yes,it is in the woodpecker family. What a determined bird.
Hi Michele, you took some lovely photos. I used to hear a bird tapping all the time under our bedroom window. He used to wake us up. I'm not very good in my bird identification but the thought that came to mind was this one might be some kind of flicker. You've probably have more knowledgeable people to properly identify it for you and I will be interested in what they have to say. I'll be back to check again.
Your mystery bird looks like a flicker.
YOU guys are awesome!!! I googled the Flicker and did a little research on the bird and yes, sure enough that is what it is... THANK YOU!! Now I learned something new!
Thanks SO much again for YOUR HELP!!♥
That would have been my guess too! Wow I agree - what a determined bird. She destroyed that vent. Just goes to show how very strong their beaks are. YIKES!
now there will be MORE :)
Cute story to go with your photos. I would not have thought that she would have broken through your vent but then again they have no problem pecking nesting holes in trees.
